Interview@Impact100 James Boon: 若想改變世界 永不說「太忙」

25歲的James Boon 在港任設計師,但放工後,他是英國社企「Elephant Branded」的創辦人。每日的遙距業務是聘請柬埔寨婦女,將垃圾水泥袋製成潮流「大象袋」,銷售全世界。James今天更告訴我,「大象袋已進駐2萬呎高空。」最近,國泰航空都在賣,這個變廢為寶的地球恩物。

James是英國人,據個人觀察,英國不少出名的創業家,都很年輕,例如有14歲便創業的果醬男孩Fraser Doherty。年輕創業家擁有的優勢是:無窮的精力,所以像James一般,左手打工、右手創業的人不少,也容易減低創業風險。今年,他更加入香港社企微型基金UnLtd董事會,以發掘更多社企人,擴大社會企業的影響力。因為他深信,十年後的世界,將不再有商家壟斷,而是每一個人,都可創造自己的生活品牌。

What do the next 10 years have in store??

In 2024 I will be 35, quite crazy to think really. What will I be doing? where will I be? and what will the world look like? 

For myself the key is to have fun, I want to live my life doing something I enjoy. With the world changing, I believe that the world will become more connected, more globalized and more automated.

In the last 10 years we have seen the internet grow and automate a lot of our daily lives. Even in 2014 our own EB warehouse operations are almost fully automated. In 2024 it will be interesting to see what the world will look like. Will most operational jobs be automated? What will happen to middle management?

I think these questions raise the idea that a job is no longer for life. This is not all doom and gloom, as I believe actually one of the best ways to cover yourself is to have your own business. Whether you run that full time or on the side. A friend once told me the key is to have three different revenue streams, so if one fails the other two back you up. This is my plan, to grow, expand and diversify but importantly hold the core values at the center of everything we do.

In a new globalized world, I personally think that lifestyle brands will be the future.

I would love to develop the Elephant Branded brand from its product core into an adventure brand, hitting more spheres and industries. Growing on what we have but building more of a lifestyle brand than purely consumer. i.e. not only can people buy a bag but also have the option to travel and see where the bags are made or even volunteer on a project. The key is to stick to our values and keep ethical adventure at its core.

If the future is brands, then why can ethical and social companies not be some of those new lifestyle brands too. I believe the future is shared and is no longer built on the idea of monopolies and collusion, but instead on a shared vision that business in 2024 can and should be a force for good in the world!
